Virgin

The brand The Virgin Group which was started by Sir Richard Branson is a brand that has branched out into many sectors and although there are many sectors to it, it has managed to maintain a common visual identity throughout the whole brand.

The branding structure they have chosen is one that is maintained throughout the whole brand and it doesn't just involve the advertising it also involves every single element. When you look at the branding it seems as though it captures the essence of Sir Richard Branson himself.

Above Sir Richard Branson. Below some of the Virgin Group designs from all their different companies, and some of the other elements that portray the same feeling.

Bruce Mau Manifesto

Link: http://www.brucemaudesign.com/4817/112450/work/incomplete-manifesto-for-growth

Bruce Mau published this manifesto in 1998, it described his design process.

Below is my reaction to the manifesto.

1. Allow events to change you. As a designer when you are surrounded by a certain atmosphere you should be able to make your design to be in sync with that environment. An example of this is when a designer creates a design to work with the client.

2. Forget about good. When looking at the standards of what people view as good design this tends to stun the growth of the designer because it tends to stop and individual from experimenting.

3. Process is more importent than outcome. When it comes to designing something the process that went behind the design has more value than the outcome.

4. Love your experiments (as you would an ugly child).

No matter how bad a piece of work is view it as a stepping stone on the road to success

5. Go deep.

When researching don't just skim the surface pierce the skin who knows what you might find

6. Captures accidents.

When looking for answers sometimes the wrong answer can turn out to be the right one in future

7. Drift.

Daydreaming isn't always a bad thing some of the best ideas come when you don't expect it

8. Begin anywhere.

When you don't know where to start, start with the first thing that comes to mind you never know what ideas can spring from a blank page.

9. Everyone is a leader.

Humble yourself anyone can lead you to success

14. Ask stupid questions.

Never view any question as stupid silence isn't the best solution

15. Collaborate.

Sometimes two is better than one

16. ____________________.

Your mind should always have space to grow anything can give you ideas.

19. Be careful to take risks.

What you do today defines your work tomorrow

20. Repeat yourself.

A repetitive process can be the solution to your problem

21. Stand on someone’s shoulders.

Learn from those who were around before you. Get inspiration from other peoples work

22. Avoid software.

Programs in our day have a way of making anyone seem like they can design. Avoid using pre made effects. Paper is your best friend

23. Don’t clean your desk.

Untidiness can lead to finding new ideas

24. Don’t enter awards competitions.

Competitions can have a negative impact on an individual

26. Make new words.

Push your creativity don't limit it to visual art.

27. Think with your mind.

Don't depend on the Internet too much

30. Listen carefully.

Everyone has their own past experiences and those experiences can always increase your horizons

31. Take field trips.

Changing your scenery helps broaden your mind

35. Break it, stretch it, bend it, crush it, crack it, fold it.

Play around with your ideas they might take a different shape

39. Laugh.

Laughter in a working environment helps get the juices flowing

What is the ITS

The Taurus construction logo represents the ITS principles, this can be seen firstly in the fact that the font used in this logo is asans-serif font and the message trying to be portrayed by this logo is clearand simple. It immediately tells you what the company does and what image theyare trying to portray of themselves. The logo itself is not based aroundpropaganda or offensive in any way. The grid structure of the logo is clear andstraightforward and clean.

The Federal Express logo is a great example of the ITS principles its not a complicated design itsstraightforward and appealing. The is a hidden message within the logo this isthe arrow in between the E and the X the negative space has been used as anadvantage to portray what the company does. The structure itself is clean andstraightforward there aren’t too many colours within it which makes it visuallyattractive the letters are all based around the type principles like how thex-heights and the ascenders are all aligned, a invisible rectangle goes aroundthe logo enclosing it into a neat shape.

The Blue Mountain Electric inc shows the ITS principles with the structure in which the logo itself is setup, the number of colors used and the grid structure of the logo. The logo is aligned in a rectangular shape which is supported by the imagery, this helps make a solid shape. The use of colors helps maintain the ITS principles of a simplified design. The sans serif font which is used in the logo also shows the principles behind logo design in the ITS.

The Leonard Cheshire Disability logo is another logo that has a square format to keep the shape of the logo unified and balanced the single color works with the principles of the ITS. Although the font is sans serif which also aligns with ITS principles the design of it is made interesting by using a Dis with less thickness.

The BBC World News is the last logo I will tie in with the ITS principles. It also has a rectangular enclosing around it the solid colour and the sans serif font also shows these principles

One Small Seed

One small seed is a pop culture platform that looks into all the areas of pop culture. They mainly focus on three main areas music, videos, and art. As a pop culture magazine the look and feel is of a grunge nature which is usually portrayed in the pop culture. This look and feel can be seen in some of the pioneers of the pop culture world like Andy Warhol. One of the covers of the magazine is inspired by one of Andy Warhol's pieces.

This look and feel is portrayed in everything that is published including the design layout as well.
